An astronaut's optimism for 2020
Information
Video published by Chris Hadfield
In this 6-minute and 30-second video, Chris Hadfield sends us a positive message for the year 2020.
Here is a summary of his speech:
Every 4 seconds, 20 babies are born in the world and 8 people die, leaving us with 12 new people, or 3 additional humans on Earth every second. Each year, that represents about 80 million new people.
There are currently almost 8 billion of us on Earth.
It is easy to get distracted by the negative arguments that surround us every day, but sometimes we miss the beauty and the wonders happening around us.
Over the last 20 years:
More than one billion humans have come out of poverty.
4.4 million fewer children have died from disease.
130 million more children are in school.
In the United States, violent crimes have been cut in half.
There has been a 30% drop in suicides worldwide.
Dozens of astronauts have lived for several weeks in space around the planet in the International Space Station.
There is 30 times more solar electricity than in the year 2000. (recording the largest increase of any energy source on Earth)
Renewable energy represents 1/3 of global consumption. (wind, dams, solar...)
Over the last 10 years:
- Mr Hadfield's children got married and had children of their own.
- the iPad was invented
- we survived the Mayan calendar
Over the last 5 years:
- SpaceX succeeded in landing its rocket after a launch, reviving the whole concept of space conquest.
- His guitar performance from the space station on YouTube caught up with Justin Bieber's number of views ^^
- 350 million trees were planted in 12 hours.
- Karen Uhlenbeck became the first woman to win the "World top mathematics price"
Recently:
We defeated smallpox, and soon we will have eradicated polio and the plague, and we are working hard on malaria.
However, the world is getting warmer, we are burning our fossil energy very quickly and loading our air with carbon dioxide.
Yet coal energy fell by 3% in 2019, the largest drop ever recorded.
100,000 clean-energy jobs were created in the United States.
Just before 2020, some whales and sea turtles made a major comeback after coming close to extinction. The last white rhinos were artificially inseminated, helping to save the species.
Plastic recycling has never been more important.
We are the only species living in a space station, projecting ourselves toward Mars, and even seeing a black hole.
We are beginning a new decade together, let us improve all these positive things even more.
