The end of the Pewdiepie subscription madness
Pewdiepie is the nickname of a very popular YouTuber in video games and comedy, with almost 100 million subscribers in early 2019.
He was number one in subscriber count on YouTube until T-Series, an Indian music video channel, overtook him. That started a fan war with many actions on both sides to get as many people as possible to subscribe. Fans and famous YouTubers published videos to help Pewdiepie gain even more subscribers and reclaim first place. From billboards to demonstrations, the slogan "Subscribe to Pewdiepie" was everywhere.
The madness lasted several weeks before things got out of hand. More and more horrible actions appeared, until a madman carried out a shooting in a cathedral in the USA while shouting "Subscribe to Pewdiepie".
On April 28, 2019, Pewdiepie asked his fans to stop this madness. His channel could potentially be shut down by YouTube. The movement had become racial and political, which no longer suited him at all. Besides, being number one that way seemed meaningless to him.
