After a few seconds, the animal stays completely motionless. The rather surprised man places seeds in its arms and tries to wake it up.

No, the squirrel is not sick. It is a defense mechanism against flying predators. When in doubt, the small rodent stops moving, because movement is much easier to spot.

It is also possible that it heard an alarm signal from another animal suggesting the presence of a predator.
