My experience with Ixina Bayonne

Project preparation

Before doing anything, my wife and I searched the Internet for experience reports, like this one, from other people who had bought a kitchen. We noted what to do and what to avoid so we could prepare for the procedures, methods, scams to avoid, and so on.

Then we started visiting the different stores in and around Bayonne that sell kitchens, so we could choose our style according to our budget.

At first it was not looking easy: I personally wanted a dark or matte black kitchen, while my wife wanted something lighter. However, we both wanted a modern handleless model.

It is also worth knowing that, for our kitchen project, the house that would receive this kitchen had not yet been built. We only had the construction plans, and therefore the surface planned for the kitchen.

It is better, ideally, to plan the kitchen before even building the house. That way we can make sure the electrical connections are in the right places and that the custom kitchen fits perfectly.

In any case, we had started by removing some brands from our list. For example, Lapeyre did not seem very good quality to us: the drawers and hinges in store demonstrations did not have soft-close systems, and the wood seemed covered with a protective layer that could easily deteriorate. Our previous low-budget kitchen had already been made like that, so we knew the resulting problems well.

At SCHMIDT Bayonne, we found models with an attractive design, so we booked an appointment with an adviser to see what he could offer us. The furniture seemed well made, with LEDs and rather nice features.

In the very first minutes, this adviser, whose name I will not mention, legitimately asked us for our budget.
Following advice read online, we decided to announce a budget lower than reality. If you say 10,000 euros outright, your kitchen will probably end up around 13,000 or 14,000. So we announced around 6,000 or 7,000, assuming we would increase it a little later and that he would make an effort to lower the price.
The Schmidt agent immediately replied that he refused to work for nothing, even though the store was almost always empty and three agents were constantly waiting inside.
Shocked, I asked him to tell us what budget he expected. I explained that we might be able to adjust if we were convinced or had a real favorite. The agent remained completely closed and embarrassed, and indirectly asked us to leave.
My wife then told him we were not going to waste our time either; if he did not want to work, we would go elsewhere.
I will not hide it: this was probably the worst sales experience we have had. No proposal, no negotiation and, above all, no politeness. The agent did not even know the surface of our kitchen. The height of mediocrity.

So we moved on and went to Cuisinella Bayonne. There we found furniture of similar quality to SCHMIDT, but much cheaper. The salesman was very friendly, so we designed a kitchen project with him, including furniture, appliances and installation. Our quote was around 10,000 euros without the granite worktop, and we were satisfied with our project.

However, I wanted to repeat the experience with another brand to make sure we compared prices and services properly, just in case. It was not especially pleasant, but COVID did not exist yet, we had some time, and we could afford to spend two hours with a kitchen designer.

So we went to Ixina Bayonne, presented our Cuisinella project, and asked the salesman whether he could do better. I recommend this very effective tactic: with the competitor quote in hand, you can be sure the brand will do its best to be lower for an identical or better service, especially since it was Cuisinella's anniversary with several promotions.

Our Ixina Bayonne adviser was Julien. It must have been around 5 p.m.; you could see on his face that he had had an intense day, but he took very good care of us. He designed a kitchen based on our house construction plans, live, in front of us, with a fairly large screen behind him that allowed us to see the result being built step by step.
We could ask him to change this or that, and my wife chose her hood live so she could see it in the 3D rendering, which made it easy for us to imagine our future kitchen.
In short, it was a great customer experience. Ixina matched Cuisinella's price, but with a slightly different final design. The project included all appliances: oven, microwave oven, fridge, induction hob, hood, dishwasher, furniture, and the granite worktop separately, as with Cuisinella, which subcontracted to a company based in Spain.

After a few days of thought, we cancelled Cuisinella and chose Ixina. We did not try to ask Cuisinella for a counter-offer, as we considered our price reasonable.

The order at Ixina

On October 19, 2019, we confirmed our Ixina order, with a few last-minute additions, for a total of 11,000 euros without the granite worktop (2,000 euros).
We paid a 10% deposit.
The process was launched. We now had to wait for the house to be ready to receive the kitchen so that a kitchen installer could come and check the measurements, confirm the presence of electrical sockets, and so on.

Almost a year later, in September 2020, the room that could receive the kitchen was almost ready. The kitchen installer Bagnères Franck, (Facebook / Instagram), sent by Ixina, came to check all of this.
He did very neat and precise work, and identified several issues between our order specifications and the electrical work carried out. He noticed the absence of some electrical sockets as well as a few small defects here and there.

Then he reported back to Ixina, who sent us the information. We were then able to contact our home builder to report the issues, which he later corrected.

During this meeting with Ixina, we also made a 90-degree turn from our decision the previous year: we chose to change the furniture color to matte white and replaced some pieces of furniture with others. As before, Julien, the Ixina adviser, did a good job and updated everything live on his screen. Our kitchen budget therefore increased slightly, from 11,000 to 12,000 without the granite, which remained at 2,000 euros.

Ixina could now order the furniture from Germany with confirmed measurements.


Receiving the flat-pack furniture and appliances

At the end of November 2020, two months later, the carrier contacted us to organize delivery of the various items. We arranged things with our builder, because the house was not completely finished, so we could free up the garage to store everything.

Unfortunately, the order was not complete: the dishwasher, oven and microwave were missing. We were at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The oven and microwave oven were to be delivered a few weeks later, but the dishwasher would arrive much later.

The manager of the Ixina store told us that we could wash dishes by hand while waiting. But we insisted on removing the dishwasher from our initial order and bought one elsewhere, which we received quickly. We lost nothing in the exchange: same type of model, same price.
Ixina was simply unable to make this change itself, for reasons that personally escape me a little.

 


Installation

Very shortly after delivery, the kitchen installer Bagnères Franck and his colleague came to install everything.
They worked fairly quickly and did a good job.

However, a few issues appeared during this installation. The filler panels used to close the gaps along the kitchen length had not been delivered correctly at first, so the installer chose not to install them. Then the dishwasher door was delivered lacquered while our kitchen was matte.
At this stage, we still had most of the furniture and the hood.

A few days passed, on December 9, 2020, before the Spanish granite installer came to fit the granite and install our inset sink. They worked very quickly and did a great job.

Around the same period, we received our oven and microwave oven, completing the appliances waiting in the garage with the dishwasher received earlier.

On December 10, Ixina sent another kitchen installer to finalize the appliance installation. This person did not do only good work: he arrived two hours late, made several mistakes and did not behave very professionally. In short, it was a very unpleasant experience and the result was passable.

At this stage, we still did not have the missing filler panels, and we noticed a manufacturing defect in the column that holds the two stacked ovens.

We therefore made an inventory of the issues with Ixina, who reordered the column from its supplier and took good note of our feedback regarding the installer.

Finally, it was Lionel from ACB service who came to finish the kitchen installation in mid-February 2021.
He picked up the filler panels and other missing elements from Ixina. A few days earlier, we had received the new column and other parts.
He did a perfect job, with a very professional, punctual and discreet attitude.

Conclusion

When creating our kitchen with Ixina, I found their service really good. We had visited other kitchen designers, and I found Ixina better than the others. The screen behind the sales adviser, showing the kitchen being built and letting us control it live, then request changes or tests, is a real plus.

Despite some order problems and a complicated installation, Ixina stayed in very regular contact to reassure us and always did what was necessary to resolve the various issues. It was the manager of the Bayonne branch who called us most often to review any dissatisfaction and solve the problems.

Finally, to apologize for the different problems encountered, they made us a 300-euro bank transfer, a very appreciated commercial gesture.

Apart from a small design flaw that prevents us from opening a pan drawer from above because of the oven just above it, we are very happy with our Ixina kitchen. It cost us a little less than 15,000 euros all included, but it is very functional and very pleasant.

At this stage, we still did not have the missing filler panels, and we noticed a manufacturing defect in the column that holds the two stacked ovens.

We therefore made an inventory of the issues with Ixina, who reordered the column from its supplier and took good note of our feedback regarding the installer.

Finally, it was Lionel from ACB service who came to finish the kitchen installation in mid-February 2021.
He picked up the filler panels and other missing elements from Ixina. A few days earlier, we had received the new column and other parts.
He did a perfect job, with a very professional, punctual and discreet attitude.

Conclusion

When creating our kitchen with Ixina, I found their service really good. We had visited other kitchen designers, and I found Ixina better than the others. The screen behind the sales adviser, showing the kitchen being built and letting us control it live, then request changes or tests, is a real plus.

Despite some order problems and a complicated installation, Ixina stayed in very regular contact to reassure us and always did what was necessary to resolve the various issues. It was the manager of the Bayonne branch who called us most often to review any dissatisfaction and solve the problems.

Finally, to apologize for the different problems encountered, they made us a 300-euro bank transfer, a very appreciated commercial gesture.

Apart from a small design flaw that prevents us from opening a pan drawer from above because of the oven just above it, we are very happy with our Ixina kitchen. It cost us a little less than 15,000 euros all included, but it is very functional and very pleasant.
